The changing nature of work—where we work, increased competition, post-merger integrations and employees’ desire for more involvement in their work—have changed the traditional role of the manager. Rather than directing, planning, and controlling the work, managers and leaders are facilitating processes, coaching, and developing their employees. Team based organizations are built on coaching as a core competency of the team leader’s role. Managers are often called upon to coach colleagues’ team members, peers, and often their leadership in the organization. Effective leaders supplement their technical and leadership expertise with a learning mindset and build that capability in their team members and organizations. The pandemic presented challenges for managers, employees and organizations in ways that are continuing to unfold, including WFH and hybrid work arrangements. Demographic changes in the workplace, AI, wellness, work and its impact on well-being, life-work balance, dispersed teams, new ways of working, upskilling for tomorrow, sustainable practices in the workplace are affecting relationships in the work environment, requiring innovative and collaborative problem solving and the ability to flex in the implementation of decisions. This course explores the theory and practices of coaching individuals and teams as a leadership behavior. The focus is on helping managers develop their skills and improve their coaching leadership. We will examine the need to provide others with successful performance strategies, timely feedback on strengths and on development needs and growth opportunities to challenge others to reach their potential.
