Race, Sport & Education: Duke Basketball

Catalog description

This course uses Duke's athletic history, present, and future to explore how Black intelligence is recognized or not recognized and the value of Black athletes' intellectual capacity in college athletics over time. We will do this primarily, but not exclusively, through CB Claiborne's story. We will discuss the role of race-based slavery on the emergence of Black education in America leading up to Duke's Athletic integration in 1965 and the emergence of Duke Basketball as a global brand, including five men's national champions, 'one-and-done' during the Coach K era until the present with new Name, Image & Likeness (NIL) legislation. This course may include travel to sites within Durham and on-campus such as the Duke Homestead State Historical Site.
