Catalog description

This course explores Spatial Interaction Design (Spatial IxD), an emerging field at the intersection of Design and HCI. Students will learn the vocabulary, principles, and methods of Spatial IxS while prototyping room-scale experiences using motion tracking, dynamic projection mapping, IoT devices, and wavefield synthesis. Through hands-on projects, students will investigate how proximity, orientation, configuration, location, and locomotion shape co-located and shared experiences within physical environment: from images that extend beyond screens onto walls to sound that moves dynamically around people and objects. Class sessions combine lectures, reading discussions, tutorials, working sessions, and design reviews, providing students both conceptual grounding and practical experience in crafting interactions that leverage technology to reconnect people with one another and with the physical objects around them.
