The Business of Design
Carnegie Mellon University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course addresses a critical but often missing component of design education: preparing designers for the real-world business dynamics that shape successful careers after graduation. For students who are serious about building meaningful, sustainable careers—or one day leading their own studios—understanding how design operates within the realities of clients, budgets, expectations, market cycles, macroeconomic forces, and relationships is essential. The course also examines why some designers and studios build lasting success while others struggle to sustain momentum, translating industry lessons into practical guidance for young professionals. At its core, design is a business of relationships. This course focuses on client development and management, aligning and exceeding expectations, pricing and value creation, negotiation, communication, and professional positioning. Students explore how trust, perception, and experience shape opportunity—how the client’s perception of the work and the collaboration ultimately defines success. Emphasis is placed on the reality that designers work in service of client goals and outcomes, not in isolation of personal taste. Beyond craft, the course prepares students to think like creative leaders and future founders—learning to work on a business, not just in it. Through real-world case studies, scenarios, and practical examples drawn from professional practice, students gain knowledge rarely taught in design school but essential to building a resilient and rewarding career that can adapt to market cycles, economic shifts, and the evolving realities of the design industry.
