Robotics in the Real World

Catalog description

According to science fiction, robots should be everywhere by now. Where are they? When will we have robot pets? Where's the robot that will clean my house? Why do autonomous vehicles make mistakes? In reality, robotic systems are already here and quite capable, but not in the way storytellers predicted. This course will examine where robots are working well, why they are working well, and where things are heading. The course will compare fictional robots, robot products, and research robots to develop a better understanding of real robotic systems. Students will be expected to review case study materials in advance of classroom discussions. Additional outside work includes homework, quizzes, class participation, and a team project. No engineering or programming skills are required. This course is not intended for students pursuing a robotics degree (e.g., robotics minor, additional major in robotics, BS in robotics). This course can be taken concurrently with 16-161 or 16-467 .
