MCM 1702A
Nonbinary Thought and Elemental Media Practices
Brown University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Engaging what Denise Ferreira da Silva has called “elemental cinema", this class pauses in the interval of the false binary between theory and practice in the arts. We will read texts, view or listen to artwork, and craft responses in multiple materialities. Readings in Black feminist thought, transmedia, tidalectics, decolonial method, poethics, and new materialisms will accompany our engagement with artworks that challenge the habits and limits of screenal, embodied, or narrative forms (Bellmore, Shonibare, Whittle, Cassils, Warhol, Jaffa, Vo, Lemon, Gumbs, Rosenbach/Nauman, Bey among others). On class days without assigned reading/viewing students will share their own creative responses, collaborative or solo, in their chosen visual, object, textual, sonic, or performance-based work.
