Catalog description

If today’s digital technologies are built upon yesterday’s fictions, it matters which fictions we embrace and it matters how we speculate future technologies. Imagination may be our greatest resource for liberating technologies from an ideology of ‘technosolutionism.’ In this production course we’ll work primarily with moving image formats such as video installation, video essay, video performance. We’ll employ a science fiction lens to co-create futures which value ethical, equitable, and sustainable relationships. Expect readings, discussions, technical workshops, and weekly assignments leading to a final project. We’ll also examine works by artists, activists, and science fiction authors that engage community with care, cast light on climate injustice, mass resource extraction, racial bias in tech, and surveillance capitalism.
