Catalog description

This course equips students to think creatively and well about what might be encountered under the categories of “Blackness” and “cinematic reality” even as it aims to expose students to how “Blackness” and “legibility” have been thought in selected recent scholarly and expressive works. Our emphasis will be on Black diasporic audio-visual culture. We will consider scholarship in the cinema and media studies, performance studies, art history, and visual studies. Though most of the material we will consider was published recently, we will strive to understand the ideas and expressions that have created the fundament for our present concerns.
