Experiments in NonFiction Film and Media
Brown University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
We live in a time of unprecedented access to both making and consuming media. Holding a creative practice offers a space to slow down, observe, and reflect. This course introduces students to creative practice as a way of seeing, sensing, and reflecting on the world. While work across mediums is welcome, we will focus on filmmaking not only as a technical skill, but as a mode of inquiry — a process of listening, experimenting, and developing one’s creative voice. Students will engage in hands-on experimentation exploring nonfiction shapes experience, memory, and perception while drawing from critical theory to question binaries of theory and practice. By the end of the semester, students will complete several short experiments and one final nonfiction project that synthesizes both theoretical and personal insight into their own creative practice.
