Between Media and Ecology: Life, Technology, and Inhabitation

This course examines the entwinement between media and ecology, exploring how they affect, structure, and shape living systems. We understand “ecology” not just as a thematic concern of media content or as a scientific and cultural narrative on media platforms. Instead, we approach it as a critical framework to rethink perception, relationality, embodiment, and systems of meaning. We analyze the material conditions—geophysical resources, labor, and infrastructures—that enable media technologies and explore “media” as a dynamic process of “mediation” and networks of technologies of power. In an era of climate crises, we ask how ecological and media systems coconstitute subjectivity, community, and political agency. Our texts and media objects will prompt us to challenge the very concepts of “media” and “ecology,” as we think through our situated, material conditions of being and relationality.
