Brown University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Drawing on a range of case studies from film, television, and social media and thinking with larger cultural and political contexts, this course will consider remediation of the digital (social media, phone screens, computer screens) as an aesthetic and narrative form. Interrogating transmediations of new media, the course will consider the stakes of these representations. How are gender, sexuality, and race considered in both remediation and transmediation? How do ideas of the digital function on film and television? What aesthetic features have shifted to depict YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and other social media platforms in “old” forms of media? Considering texts interested in online connections (mutual, romantic, transactional, parasocial, paranormal, etc.), theories of remediation, transmediation, digital media will guide discussions concerning the aesthetic and narrative function of our cultural obsession with new media.
