DIY: Notes from the Underground

DIY: Notes from the Underground explores DIY and alternative creative practices, communities and subcultures through the potentiality of the “underground” as a site of radical making. But what, exactly, do we mean by “underground”? Readings, discussions and screenings will engage theories of situationism, hacking, the remix, subculture and opacity alongside histories of DIY creative communities, punk, zines, fashion, and the garage as a site of creativity. Students will engage with “underground” subcultural productions across music, contemporary art and performance, fashion, film and television. Overall, this course is an exploration of DIY as a critique of cultural production under capitalism, with an emphasis on experimentation and creativity “underground.
