MCM 0750K
Experimental Video and Emerging Media
Brown University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This production course explores experimental video and media practices that challenge conventional cinematic forms and modes of storytelling. Each week, we will engage with the aesthetic and critical dimensions of a range of experimental approaches, including essay films, video poetry, elemental and immersive media environments, video game documentaries, and forms of micro-cinema—such as internet memes and animated GIFs—as well as critical engagements with generative AI. Through hands-on workshops in video and image-making, alongside screenings and discussions, students will complete short creative assignments and develop a major final project. Guest lectures by invited artists and filmmakers will provide insight into current moving-image practices. The course will culminate in a group screening and exhibition at the MCM-Carriage House.
