CS 581FNetwork Sys & Perform Analysis

Catalog

Introduces modern networking systems and methods for modeling and analyzing their performance. From hands-on experimentation on local to wide-area networks of different scales, to mathematical analysis of basic queueing models using random process and probability concepts, students will learn how network performance depends on its hardware, software, and architecture choices. Designed for students with basic computer systems and probability concepts, the course covers networking fundamentals, network performance measurement methods and tools, and mathematical performance analysis using basic queueing theory. Through lectures, guided experiments, and a semester-long team project, students will learn to identify standard architectures and protocols of local computer networks; utilize standard network models and probabilistic traffic models to analyze local computer networks; carry out mathematical calculations required in statistical analyses, including calculus, probability functions, logical and numerical algebra; determine suitable models, performance measures, and design factors of local computer networks; utilize software defined networking tools to compose and study network protocols and performance. Prerequisite: MATH 327 or equivalent, or instructor approval. Expected to be offered once every academic year. 3 credits.
