Intro to Cloud Computing

Catalog description
Provides a systematic introduction to cloud computing from both system and architectural perspectives. It covers topics including virtualization, operating-system level resource isolation, distributed systems, containerization, and cloud-native service architectures. Students will study key enabling techniques such as server, network, and storage virtualization; process and resource management in virtualized environments; and modern runtime platforms including containers and orchestration frameworks. The course further examines microservices design, service communication patterns, scalable data processing frameworks, and performance considerations in large-scale cloud systems. Hands-on labs and projects will expose students to representative cloud software stacks and industry platforms, enabling them to understand how real cloud systems are built, deployed, and operated. Prerequisite: CS 350, must have a grade of C- or better. Typically offered once every academic year.
