Operating Systems

Catalog description

Introduction to the design and implementation of operating systems. The course examines the major operating system themes of virtualization, concurrency, and persistence through topics including the hardware/software interface, processes and threads, CPU scheduling, virtual memory and memory management, synchronization, race conditions, deadlocks, file and storage systems, protection, and multiprocessor operating systems. Required labs reinforce core concepts; separate programming projects provide hands-on experience in both user-space systems programming and kernel-level development using real operating systems. Prerequisites: CS 220 and CS 310 (both must be completed) and CS 301 (may be taken concurrently). All prerequisites must have a grade of C- or better. Offered every semester.
