Catalog description

This course is a survey of visual culture within selected regions in Africa, Oceania, and indigenous North America. Students will explore art from prehistoric to contemporary periods and analyze the art within its original context, historical context, and spiritual context. This will include learning about symbolism, social functions, and how both play a role in art creation. While there is an emphasis on ritual, environment, and tradition, students will also survey the placement of these art pieces in museums and how it may relate to the process of colonization and decolonization. This course is designed for all students seeking to learn more about art beyond Western society. This course fulfills C-ID ARTH 140 (Arts of Africa, Oceania, and Indigenous North America) transfer standards. Grades are P/NP options. Advisories Language-Recommended eligibility for ENGL 1A.
