This course introduces students to foundational microbiology concepts relevant to ophthalmic practice, principles of surgical assisting, and basic ophthalmic imaging techniques. Topics include infection control and microorganisms affecting the eye, roles and responsibilities of ophthalmic technicians in surgical settings, and the purpose and clinical application of ophthalmic photography and videography. Emphasis is placed on patient safety, sterile technique concepts, workflow awareness, and the interpretation and use of images for documentation and patient care. Hands-on performance of surgical assisting and imaging techniques is addressed in designated laboratory and clinical courses. Additional Information: Courses must be taken in the prescribed sequence as part of a cohort. Students progress through the certificate together, and courses are not available out of sequence. Lecture – 3 credit hours .
