Readings in Medieval Talmudic Commentaries and Halakhic Compendia

Catalog description

This series of courses will analyze a set of variegated pericopes (sugyot) within a particular talmudic tractate, through the reading of a wide range of primary rabbinic sources produced in medieval Europe and Islamic lands. Through careful consideration of the historical and conceptual underpinnings of these works (with emphasis on both published and manuscript texts) and on the intellectual milieu of their authors, significant interpretative methods and patterns will be identified and developed.
