Catalog description

This course offers an in-depth study of Masechet Megillah, a tractate that explores the laws and structure of Megillat Esther, the observance of Purim, and the practices surrounding public gatherings for Laining and communal mitzvot. Core topics include the halachot of Megillah reading, the role of the city and community structure in Halacha, the functions of the shul, and the framework for Laining on holidays and fast days.In addition to engaging with the major themes of the masechta, this course will emphasize the development of foundational Gemara learning skills. Students will work on parsing the text, identifying question-and-answer structures, tracking the flow of a sugya, and analyzing the positions of Tannaim and Amoraim. There will be a strong focus on building Aramaic vocabulary, improving reading fluency, and fostering the analytical habits necessary for independent Gemara study.
