Doctoral students preparing for leadership roles require familiarity with educational issues. Social work education exists in universities at the bachelor, master, and doctoral levels, in agencies through field instruction, staff supervision, in-service training, continuing education, and professional conferences and institutes. Creating a classroom that gives voice to all students' perspectives and strengths is highlighted. Social work epistemology and the current CSWE social work competencies are presented in depth. Designing curricula to meet competencies by level is explored. Knowledge of how students' histories in school settings have impacted their current feelings of inclusion, confidence, or marginalization, and strategies for maximizing inclusion are offered. Theories about the class as a group emphasize skills for creating a safe classroom. Virtual class modalities are reviewed. Students are expected to teach a 20-minute class session and engage in a self and peer critique.
