Catalog description

In this course, students are exposed to a broad spectrum of approaches along with illustrative empirical studies of qualitative research and its importance in informing social policy. The five approaches to qualitative inquiry are studied in-depth with an emphasis on student interests and their possible use for dissertation research. The approaches include phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, case studies, and narrative research. Included are special areas of interest such as feminism, critical race theory, and gender identity theories. Mixed methods research is covered to give students a broad understanding of the multiple uses of qualitative inquiry. Students are expected to use their own prospective studies as examples of qualitative inquiry and to revise them as the semester progresses. The course offers students the knowledge and skills to develop potential designs for dissertation research.
