Social Work Practice with Children

Catalog description

In this course, students develop conceptual, practical, and ethical frameworks that inform their practice with infants, children, and adolescents and their families. Specific theories of development and practice are explored for their applicability to client needs. Students formulate therapeutic interventions with the children and their families based on assessments that include an appreciation of the impact of agency context, minority/majority power issues, trauma, ethnicity, gender, race, social class, cultural issues, biological developmental issues, as well as relevant practice research findings. Ways of working with other team members such as psychologists, psychiatrists, educational professionals, health care professionals, and members of the judicial system will be explored. The core knowledge, practice principles, and skills developed in the foundation courses will be specifically applied as they relate to the complex work with children and families. Prerequisite(s): SWK 6003 , SWK 6004 , SWK 6531 , SWK 6532 ; or ACC.
