Catalog description

This course covers mathematical methods broadly useful in physics at a level appropriate for undergraduate physics students and others with a similar mathematical background. Mathematical methods are introduced from first principles and applied to technological problems including electrical circuits, heat transfer, mechanical sensors and actuators, percussion, wind and string musical instruments, and signal processing. The presentation emphasizes analytical mathematics together with the construction of computational algorithms capable of producing numerical results for practical applications. The course focuses on mathematical descriptions of oscillations, waves, diffusion, and driven systems arising in many areas of physics and engineering. Prerequisite(s): MATH 1413 ; and MATH 1510 may be taken as a prerequisite or corequisite.
