Catalog description

This course provides a theoretical and practical overview of U.S. immigration law and policy. The development of immigration law will be studied against historical and political contexts. We will also discuss methods by which individuals are granted permission to enter the United States, permitted to stay, and required to leave, as well as debates over issues such as forced migration and citizenship. By the end of the semester, students should gain an understanding of the complexities of immigration law and policy, as well as some facility analyzing the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) and associated case law. The final grade will be based primarily upon the results of the final examination. Class attendance and participation are also important and may impact the final grade by up to one third of a grade (e.g., from A to A-). Recommended: LAW 7502 , and/or Law 7521.
