This course will explore critical doctrinal and policy matters regarding the regulation of U.S. elections. The legal frameworks governing the right to vote and redistricting (including racial and partisan gerrymandering) will figure prominently. But it will also cover topics such as ballot access, the regulation of political parties, the Electoral College, and pre- and post-election contests and controversies among others that stem from the Constitution, major federal legislation (including the Voting Rights Act), and state law. While it is a doctrinal course, it will necessarily draw on other disciplines like history, political theory, and public policy as we examine the manner in which law and other forces structure political participation in the U.S.
