Legal Process for Labor and Employment Law

Catalog description

This foundational course introduces students to sources of law relevant to labor and employment law; finding, analyzing, and understanding these sources of law; and communicating basic written legal analysis. The course begins with an overview of the American legal system and sources of law. Students will learn how multiple sources of law and systems work together affecting employment and labor law, including federal and state statutes and regulations. Students will learn the roles of different lawmaking bodies and their differing abilities to affect labor and employment law. Students will be introduced to caselaw and common law but will focus on enacted law. Students will learn to find, interpret and analyze statutes and regulations, and develop foundational legal writing and analysis skills. Through multiple short writing assignments, students will learn to apply statutes and regulations to analyze legal issues relating to labor and employment law.
