The Philosophy of Maimonides

A detailed study of Maimonides' philosophical thought based on a close analysis of selections from his Guide of the Perplexed alongside his treatises and halakhic writings. After establishing the philosophical context out of which Maimonides' writings emerge, we will pay attention to his methodology, Biblical exegesis, and the key metaphysical themes in his thought. The course aims to furnish students with the ability to 1) give their own interpretations of the primary texts & justify them; 2) assess their philosophical content; & 3) engage critically with the secondary literature.
