Jews Under Roman Rule

This course examines Jewish history from the consolidation of Roman control over the land of Israel and other geographical regions of Jewish inhabitation (1stcentury BCE) through the Christianization of the empire (4th century CE). Though we will generally follow a chronological sequence, this will not be a chronological historical survey. Rather, we will cover selected themes and trends relating to political, social, and religious development under the dynamic pressures of imperial rule, as well as specific events of interest (e.g., the violent uprisings of 66-70, 115-117, and 132-135 CE), with an eye toward engaging the diverse variety of research methodologies and debates driving the current scholarly discourse.
