This course explores the history, development, and impact of blood libels, host desecration accusations, and other antisemitic conspiracy theories from medieval times to the modern era. Students will examine historical cases, the socio-political contexts in which these libels emerged, and the various explanations and motivations behind them, including religious, economic, and political factors. A significant portion of the course will be dedicated to Jewish responses and reactions, analyzing Halachic (Jewish legal) and theological perspectives, as well as communal, intellectual, and legal efforts to counter these accusations. Through primary and secondary sources, students will gain a deep understanding of how these false charges shaped Jewish history, influenced broader societal attitudes, and contributed to the persistence of antisemitic narratives.
