Choiceless Choices: The Kindertransport
Yeshiva University · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
Lawrence L. Langer coined the term 'choiceless choice' to describe decisions Jews were forced to make in which either option presented might well end in despair and death. Jews had no choices during the Holocaust; they had only choiceless choices. Sending a child on the Kindertransport was once such choiceless choice for Jewish parents. This module will explore the history and complexities of the Kindertransports themselves and the decisions parents made as they struggled with the dilemma of sending their child away in the hope of saving his or her life.
