Women in the Hebrew Bible

Catalog description

Female characters play key roles throughout the Hebrew Bible. The act as queens, princesses, sex workers, mothers, daughters, midwives, prophets, and they even embody ideological concepts like wisdom and vice. In this class we will use literary analysis to investigate these characters, the roles they play in the larger narrative of the Hebrew Bible, and the ways in which writing, power, and patriarchy are connected in both the ancient and modern worlds. We will engage deeply with the primary sources and then enter into conversation with secondary sources that seek to analyze the roles these women play not only in ancient literature but in our world today. We will also examine the ways the women of the Hebrew Bible have been represented in art throughout history.
