Catalog description

This elective will present an overview of mental health diagnosis, assessment and intervention focusing on professional work in the mental health field by social workers and other helping professionals. Using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM and other relevant materials, students will become familiar with common disorders and the process by which these disorders are assessed using the lens of social work practice. Furthermore, participants will gain general understanding of widely used treatment courses and intervention techniques to address mental illness by using case and profession specific examples. Throughout the class, students will also focus on critically analyzing the nature of the psychiatric diagnosis and available interventions/treatment as they relate to issues of gender, culture, race, age, sexual orientation, political power, and socioeconomic status in the context of current day implementation.
