African Leadership

Catalog description

This course will examine African leadership from 1300 to the present. Spiritual, cultural and political leaders will be situated within the broader context of the society from which they emerge, allowing students to see leadership as both deeply situational but also sharing similarities across time and place. Some of the leaders to be considered include: Sunjata, founder of the Mali Empire (14th c.); Queen Njinga of the Kongo (17th c.); Haile Selassie of Ethiopia (early 20th c.) and Winnie Mandela of South Africa (late 20th c.). After six weeks of studying four African leaders, students will embark on their own research projects of African leaders.
