Catalog description
This class will explore the social, political, and cultural history of Britain from the late 19th century to the late 20th century. In particular, we will consider the impact of the British Empire on British society, the rise and (perhaps) fall of the working class, the nature and effect of \201Ctotal war,\201D the rise and (perhaps) fall of the Welfare State, and the nature and significance of youth culture. Primary source material will largely be drawn from popular culture, including novels, music, films, plays, advertisements, and propaganda.
