Catalog description

This course explores the history, cultural politics, and contemporary social and economic realities of Cincinnati and its inhabitants by engaging with texts that focus on race relations, immigration, and social justice activism. Thus, in the context of race relations, students will explore the history of the Underground Railroad in the area, the Cincinnati riots of 1829 where white mobs targeted and brutalized Black residents, the history of police violence and Black activism, as well as the practice of redlining and its local impact. Among other topics, students will also study Cincinnati\2019s LGBT history and the contributions of different groups of immigrants who have shaped the city in both its past and present. The class incorporates a number of experiential learning activities outside of the classroom; these include excursion to the Harriet Beecher Stow House, the National Underground Freedom Center, the German Heritage Museum, the Nancy and David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center, and the Skirball Museum.
