Graduate Cohort Social Studies

Catalog description

This course is designed to prepare students to teach social studies to children in preschool through fifth grade from a holistic, developmentally appropriate perspective. Students will become more familiar with best practices, teaching strategies, and classroom application in the disciplines of social studies instruction and thinking and teaching globally through a lens of equity and justice. In addition, an interdisciplinary approach with other content areas will be explored. The university classroom will involve collaborative learning within a constructivist seminar setting. The accompanied, yet separate, field component will allow for observation and strategy implementation in a k-5 classroom. During this time, students will observe, plan, and implement lessons in whole and small groups guided by their cooperating teacher. Topics to be studied include thematic strands of social studies including civics, economics, geography, and history, constructivist theory in integrated curriculum, global competencies, and the six language arts. Prerequisites: EDFD501 Co-requisites: EDEL605,EDEL610 Restrictions: Must be enrolled in one of the following Levels: Graduate College of Health and Human Sciences School of Education
