Catalog description

This course will explore the concepts and strategies for prevention and recovery while addressing substance use disorders in counseling. This will involve reviewing the Surgeon General\2019s Report on Alcohol, Drugs and Health \2013 Facing Addiction in America (2016), and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) to identify the criteria for substance use disorders (SUD) and commonly identified co-occurring conditions. There will be discussions on how to achieve therapeutic rapport and obtain treatment outcomes. The course addresses aspects of the 2016 CACREP CORE area in specialty area of addiction counseling as well as topics included in the Program Area Standards for School and Clinical Mental Health counseling programs. Restrictions: Must be enrolled in one of the following Levels: Graduate College of Health and Human Sciences Counseling
