Introduction to the Courts

This course is designed to introduce students to the court system and its importance to our system of governance and the reasons that we have government courts. Students will gain an understanding of the legal basis for the American court system from early legal codes, common law, modern criminal codes, administrative regulations, and constitutions (federal and local). Students will be able to define and distinguishing between criminal and civil law concepts as well as understanding the different type of courts: federal, state, juvenile and specialty. Students will develop an understanding of the roles and rights of the defendant’s and victims and how the court process works from beginning to end.
