Econ of the US Constitution

Catalog description

This course examines the economic history and political economy of the United States from the imperial crisis of the 1760s through Reconstruction. We focus on how economic factors, such as conflicts over taxation, public credit, money and banking, trade policy, land and expansion, labor systems, slavery, and state-building shaped constitutional debates and institutional design, and how constitutional change impacted economic development. Students will learn how to work with both primary and secondary sources as an economic historian would. They will also be expected to defend their positions on different topics and present their ideas to various audiences through oral and written communication. Restrictions: Must be enrolled in one of the following Levels: Graduate College of Arts & Sciences Political Science
