Primary focus on Shinto, both early Shinto and later nationalistic Shinto, the varieties of Japanese Buddhism, and Japanese “new” religions. Topics include: religious doctrine, faith and devotion, self-cultivation and enlightenment, monasticism, and religion and the state.
