Catalog description

An introductory survey to music history, including western art music and global perspectives. This survey focuses on the contributions of performers and composers in music history, as well as patrons, scientists, instrument makers, and other individuals. The course includes music listening and style analysis, with particular emphasis on the cultural and historical contexts for selected examples. Students will engage with primary and secondary source materials and learn to analyze and critique various approaches to historiography. Additionally, students are asked to think critically about contemporary issues that impact their relationship to music, including changing technologies.
