THEORY AND PRACTICE OF WORKING WITH MULTILINGUAL STUDENTS

This course explores the social, cultural, and educational issues connected to the experiences in schools of youth who are being raised in families and communities where languages other than English are commonly spoken. Some of these issues are: translanguaging (multilingual) teaching and learning, multicultural education, politics of language education and policy in the US; race, racism, and discrimination in schooling; design and implementation of BE and ESL programs; theories of language acquisition; methods for teaching BE/ESL; social contexts of schooling; the roles of culture and families, and more.
