Catalog description

This class focuses on the often misunderstood "lesser" half of the fine art vs. craft binary. Also variously dubbed material culture, decorative arts, or applied arts - crafts have always been integral to human life and reflect the cultures in which they were made, used, re-used, collected, and displayed. Focusing on specific media - ceramics, textiles, organic materials, metals, and glass - we will delve into different themes from prehistoric innovation and experimentation to early modern globalization and Contemporary studio arts. PREREQ: ARTHIST 201 OR ARTHIST 202 OR ARTHIST 203
