An Introduction to a Sustainable Student Affairs Profession

Introduces student affairs as a professional field and area of study. It will focus on the roles and functions of professionals in the field, the student populations served, the components necessary in a college or university setting to make a sustainable student affairs profession, the skills and competencies for a successful professional to develop, and current issues facing student affairs. By the completion of this course, students will gain an understanding of: (1) The history and societal influences that shaped the field of student affairs and higher education. (2) The professional competencies and standards that guide student affairs work. (3) An understanding of the theoretical basis of the field of student affairs, including a focus on student developmental theory, program development and review, and the assessment of student learning. (4) The organization and administration of the field of student affairs including the functional areas within student affairs, the role, and responsibilities of professionals within all areas and levels of the profession. (5) Contemporary issues in student affairs and the challenges facing student affairs, while also addressing sustainable practices to ensure the future success of the profession. (6) The written and verbal communication skills necessary for professional in the field of student affairs. This course is part of a service-based pricing program. Special tuition will apply for students enrolling in this course.
