Historical, Philosophical, and Multicultural Foundations of Education

Catalog description

This course is a survey of the development of the American educational system from the colonial period to the present. This includes an exploration of the origin and influence of varied philosophical orientations of education, including key voices and schools of thought, from both American and global sources. Students will apply new historical and philosophical understandings to various issues in education, such as policy-making, curriculum development, school law, finance, and professional ethics. Inherent in these explorations is the role of racial and ethnic diversity on the creation of American national identity, the enactment of federal and state policies, and the politics of educational opportunity. We will also survey issues of employment and professional development.
