School-Based Mental Health Assessment & Intervention

Catalog description
This class serves as a survey course to augment the student¿s understanding of mental health issues and needs of children and youth and how such issues impact their performance in schools; furthermore, the role of school psychologists as behavioral and mental health specialists is also emphasized. Topics addressed include current psychiatric/psychological diagnostic and educational classification systems; school-based assessment and intervention practices; trauma sensitive and informed approaches; preventing and addressing youth suicide; behavior threat assessment and management; social justice matters; and ethical considerations that apply to mental health and schools. Learning is supported through direct instruction; small and large-group discussions; cooperative group work; and independent projects.
