Condensed Matter Physics
University of Wisconsin-River Falls · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course provides a broad introduction to the physics of solids and soft matter, including experimental techniques. Topics covered include crystalline structure, lattice dynamics, the behavior of electrons in metals, semiconductors, and superconductors. Additional topics covered may include, but are not limited to: X-ray diffraction, dielectric and magnetic properties, vacuum systems, thin film deposition, photolithography and electron-beam lithography, scanning probe microscopies, scanning electron microscopy, and the mechanical properties of solids. Pre-requisites: PHYS 264 & MATH 331. PHYS 465 (Quantum Mechanics) is a strongly recommended (not required) prerequisite. (Sp, alternate years)
