This class examines the history of North America through the prism of environmental history, from Native American environmental practices to the environmental issues of today. We will examine how humans understood and shaped North American environments, and how these environments also worked to shape them. Topics include Native American resource management, land use and slavery, American nature writing, Conservationism, natural disasters, environmentalism, urban sprawl, environmental racism and the debate over climate change.
