Love, Sex, and Marriage in the Pre-Modern World (g)

Catalog description

This course will acquaint students with the contents and historical evolution of the primary phenomena informing human socialization and relatedness, love, sex, and marriage. Through class lectures, readings and discussion of primary written sources, and analysis and interpretation of relevant artwork, the course will explore the distinct and evolving, as well as related and stable, meanings and significances that societies around the world, from the time of the ancient Mesopotamians to the French Revolution of 1789, infused in the ideas and institutions that embodied, regulated, and structured these key human experiences.
